Smog Response Plan

What does the City do During a Smog Advisory?

When a Smog Advisory has been issued, the City of Hamilton activates the Smog Response Plan.

Why does the Smog Plan Exist?

The purpose of the Smog Response Plan is to advise the public and City staff to smog conditions, while providing tips to improve air quality and minimize effects on health.

What does the Plan entail?

Under the plan, the City informs local media that a Smog Advisory has been issued, and provides information on how to protect health and improve air quality during this period. This plan also outlines operational procedures for City staff to follow during a smog advisory. For example, staff are advised to:

  • Postpone, where possible, activities that use gas powered equipment

  • Restrict vehicle refuelling during the day

  • Delay discretionary use of vehicles

  • Reduce the use of oil-based paints, solvents and cleaners
